Affective Skills
We started our day with a fun get to know you activity, "Interest Scavenger Hunt". The kids got to know each other a little better.
Today we continued our mindfulness practice with a review of "Still Quiet Place". This is a strategy kids can use to help them think of a relaxing place whenever they feel a need for a bit of calming.
We also reviewed different ways of learning by discussing the multiple intelligences. We took surveys to help the kids identify areas of learning strength.
We worked on our collaboration skills with a teambuilding activity, "The Marshmallow Challenge". It was definitely an interesting process, and the kids learned a lot about teamwork and problem solving.
We also worked on developing our affective skills by including several questions about our Multiple Intelligences and various thinking skills in our "Target Scavenger Hunt".
Algebraic Thinking Skills
We got started on our algebraic thinking curriculum-Hands On Equations. This system uses plastic pieces and a mat to allow kids to physically represent and solve algebraic equations. We also use teacher created videos and the Hands-On-Equations app to individualize instruction for our math time. The HOE Level 1 app is $1.99. For more info click: Hands On Equations. This would be a great way for your child to preview, practice, and/or review the concepts we'll be working on in class.
Novel Study
The kids had a great time beginning our new novel, House of Robots. It is a hilarious graphic novel about a boy whose mother creates a Robot Pal for the family. The kids were challenged to use their divergent thinking skills of Fluency & Originality to come up with ideas about an "Important Science Experiment".
