Dreaming Big & Learning Big!

2/27/2020

We started our day with some wonderful collaborative creative and logical thinking!  The kids are working well on their Learning Huddles and getting better and better with their creative conversations.

Algebraic Thinking:
Some of our kids continued with our Hands On Equations lessons.  Our beginners are progressing through the foundational lessons with others moving on to more complex concepts.  Our experienced algebra students worked on Word Problems, which are a big challenge because the students have to translate the meaning to an equation and then solve it.  It was a bit of a bumpy road today, so we'll continue slowly working on applying these concepts.

Stations:
We continued our work from last week.  Our convergent thinking skills got a workout with a logic puzzle.  The February F2OE challenged our creative thinking with wonderfully divergent solutions!

Affective Skills:
We continued our "Dreams" work with poems and sketches of our art to go with our poems.  I can't wait to see how the kids put the two together next week.
We continued our Mindfulness Practice with "5 Minutes of Mindful Breathing".

Novel Study:
We continued our novel, and found out more about improv through the characters in our book.  The kids got a chance to try out an improv game called "Superheroes".  They really liked it.

Please check your child's Assignment Sheet in the Target Folder for upcoming Target Day switches.  We've had to swap a few days because of Performing Arts programs and Field Trips coming up in March and April.

Finding Our Genius!

Learning Huddles gave us a nice 'Soft Start" today!  The kids had fun creating, collaborating, and problem solving together!

Unit Study:
We continued our research and project work for Genius Hour.  They seem to be making good progress, moving toward finished projects.  We have two more class work sessions before projects are due.

Novel Study:
We read a bit independently, analyzed and evaluated, and read a bit together.  The kids are enjoying this book, especially the fun improv activities!

Algebraic thinking:
We are all moving forward learning new concepts that help us solve increasingly more challenging equations.

Stations:
We stretched our convergent thinking skills with logic puzzles, choosing from Perplexors or Grid-Style puzzles.  We also lit our creative fires with an F2OE for February.

Affective Skills:
We continued our work on big dreams, with a wonderful book called Dreams. The kids are working on writing poems to describe their big dream and then will illustrate that poem with artwork next week.

Our Mindfulness Practice was important today, since we had lots of extra energy with all the rainy days we've had lately!

Staying Dry & Learning a Lot!

We had a "Soft Start" today with Learning Huddles this morning.  No worksheets, just collaborative activities to engage our creativity and critical thinking skills.  The kids loved it, and some found a new passion!

Algebraic thinking:
We jumped back into Hands On Equations.  Whew!  With 4 groups to manage, we're trying some alternative strategies to give each group some individual learning time.  The kids did really well, and are ready to move on next week.

Unit Study:
We continued research and work on our Genius Hour Projects.  The kids will have four more class periods to work before the Projects will be shared on Wednesday, March 18th.  We will be switching Target Day some of our days in March because of special programs at school on Thursdays.

Novel Study:
We read a bit more of our book, and even tried a little bit of Improvisation like they do in the novel.  The kids did fantastic with it, so we'll definitely be doing more of that!  It's an amazing way to encourage creativity and collaboration!

We enjoyed hearing Mr. Rick Parker, Gifted Lead at JJ Daniell Middle School, explain all about what to expect from Middle School.  He shared so much great information, especially about gifted classes and options for classes, connections, and clubs at middle school.
