We also learned a little about the Patent process, including the steps and why it is so important to get a patent. The kids have homework about toaster patents.

Enjoy Fall Break!

With IOWA testing, we didn't have as much time as usual for Target. We got right to work with watching a few kid inventors pitch their ideas on Shark Tank. Then we discussed how people get ideas, focusing on one method of divergent thinking: SCAMPER (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Magnify, Put to Other Uses, Eliminate, Rearrange). Later the kids sampled mini Drumstick ice cream cones and then brainstormed ways to SCAMPER the cones. The ideas were FANTASTIC! We will be working on creating Pitches next class to present to some Sharks of our own. Can't wait! We also learned a little about the Patent process, including the steps and why it is so important to get a patent. The kids have homework about toaster patents. We rolled along pretty smoothly today! The kids managed to have 10 minutes of recess today. Maybe next week, they'll finish working in time to have the full 20 minutes again! STATIONS: We worked our convergent thinking skills with mixed analogies and also a non-grid logic puzzle. The analogies were pretty good, the logic puzzle a bit more challenging! Then we did some research about famous scientists in history: Galileo,Jonas Salk, and Robert Oppenheimer using a Thinglink. Finally, we worked on our algebraic thinking skills with small group Hands On Equations sessions. The kids are moving along really well with this now, doing better and better each week. InVenture Challenge: We continued our Design Thinking Process with more work on Empathy. The kids watched a few clips from the movie, Apollo 13, that showed empathy and the engineering process. From there, they chose a real life problem to try to solve. After brainstorming solutions, they wrote persuasive letters to share their solutions. We'll be sending those letters out this week. Affective: We watched a short clip about dwelling on the "What-ifs" in life and how using a strategy (Best, Worst, Most Likely) to be more logical and less anxious. We also worked more on how to give and take feedback by thinking about how "water rolls right off a duck's back". We learned some strategies and practiced these with a few short skits. Novel Study: We continued our reading with another chapter, learning about our three scientists and how teenage life isn't all it's cracked up to be for Melvin. Check out the photos below: HW: Like Water off a Duck's Back-Reflection sheet Until next week, Dr. Kraeger Today was about working our processes to achieve success! First we worked on our stations including:
InVenture Challenge: Our work started with a video about IDEO, one of the world's best known product design firms. The kids really enjoyed seeing professionals at work and learned a lot about the importance of each step in the Design Thinking Process. We moved into an activity where we reviewed the Top 10 Inventions of all time and then brainstormed ideas for the 11th Greatest Invention of all time. Next, we evaluated each idea using our given criteria and ranked them according to our decision matrix. From there, we took some of these ideas and ranked them with our new activity, "Ready to Order." Although it doesn't sound like a challenge, this activity involves high level evaluative thinking skills as the kids have to decide which item to move and then defend their choice to the group. Check out the photos below. Affective: We worked on how to give and receive critical feedback. This was challenging for some, but in the end very positive. The ability to offer and accept constructive feedback is important and will be very useful in our InVenture Challenge this semester! We also continued our mindfulness practice with a video about Anxiety and then some simple breathing exercises. Novel Study: We finished our day with more work on our novel, The Fourteenth Goldfish.. We tried some observation tests to practice the most important scientific skill. Then we challenged our critical thinking with several Kahoot questions during our reading time.
