We survived Red Top!

We had a marvelous day at Red Top Mountain! Our Rangers, Jamie and Steve, were fantastic-so knowledgeable and patient!
The kids learned how to make a fire using kindling and a flint and steel. It was really hard, but most of the kids got a fire started!
The kids learned how to use a compass and do some orienteering. Most did well, a few got a bit off course.
Finally, the kids worked in groups to use fallen branches to build shelters. They worked hard in a short period of time! Check out the results in the photos below!

No Target classes next week because of Gifted Eligibility Testing.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!

Shelter Building for the Win!

What a marvelous day of learning in Target!

Unit Study:
We researched Shelter Building, Compass and Map Skills, and Firestarting to prepare for our Field Trip next week.
Next I shared a Presentation with the requirements of our Shelter Building Activity. The kids had to work in groups to collect materials from outside, design and build a shelter that would withstand both "rain" and "wind".

Novel Study:
We read a bit more about Sam's time in the woods. The kids are learning much about survival from his journal entries.

Algebraic Thinking:
We continued our Hands On Equations with the next lesson. The challenge level is definitely rising!

Affective Skills:
We created Mission Statements today. Some of them were incredibly profound! It's amazing to see the goals these kiddos have for their lives and the kind of people they strive to be. Our future is in good hands, if they're in charge!
We continued our Mindfulness Practice. It was helpful to focus our attention to take on the Shelter Building activity!

Field Trip is next Wednesday. Remind the kids to dress appropriately for the weather.

Until next time,
Dr. Kraeger
