Parachutes AWAY!

11/10/2016

We had a fantastic day of researching, designing, building, and testing our parachutes.  The groups did very well, with the longest descent taking 3.3 seconds from the top of the playscape!  Following the test, we had a mini-lesson on how to calculate averages with some practice time for the kids.

In addition to our Parachute Palooza, we also worked on writing a new chapter or new ending for our novel, 21 Balloons.  The kids are doing some AMAZING work!  Wait until you get a chance to read it!

We spent some time today with our mindfulness practice, going back to 4-7-8 Breathing, which helped keep us on track and focused for the afternoon's work.  We also continued our study of Growth Mindset with a short video and a Padlet response.

No class next week because of Gifted Eligibility Testing.  We will see the kids again on December 1st.

Multiplication, Transformation, & Transporation

We started our day with Multiplication.  Yes, the multiplication you all remember--2 digit x 2 digit--the old-fashioned way!  The kids did very well and got a chance to practice by creating a Mystery Picture from their answers!

Next, we used our creativity to do Pumpkin Transformations!  Check out the clever and divergent results in the hall!  We also tested our logical thinking skills with an old favorite hands-on activity, Versatiles.

Later we worked on innovation in transportation with a mini STEM lesson on helicopter designs, The Bunny Copters!  The kids had a great time modifying a design, flight testing it and making additional modifications.

We explored Mindsets a bit more with a fun video, Big Ideas #1.  The kids replied thoughtfully to questions about the character's mindset.

After lunch, we practiced our mindfulness with "Ocean Waves".

We finished off our day with another student-created Kahoot! battle.  We finished the book!  What an exciting story it's been!

Until next time,
