Thrills a Minute!

Stations: We worked on logical thinking by honing our convergent thinking with several different logic puzzles.  Our skills are getting stronger each week!  We also developed our creative thinking by doing a fluency activity and a transformation.  They are AMAZING-strong work!

Focus Study: Today was the big lab day!  We conducted our lab to test pH of common household liquids like lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, and dish soap.  We used homemade pH testing paper that was created from red cabbage juice.  Ask your child about it!

Algebraic Thinking:  We finished our Hands-On-Equations Assessment.  I'm looking forward to checking the results.  We also worked on some cryptograms to test our algebraic thinking.

Novel Study: We continued to make connections through our novel study.  The mystery is about to be solved, but will Claudia and Jamie be disappointed by the news?  Will they make it back home safely?  Will Mrs. Frankweiler reveal the secret?  Stay tuned for the end of the book!

HW:  First in Math (Remember, I'll be checking for awards on Tuesday, April 8th.  Get BUSY!)

Have a great Spring Break!

Third Grade had a productive day!
Stations
  • Divergent thinking: We used our creativity to write stories about what secret pets might do.  I can't wait to hear these stories next week when we share!
  • Convergent thinking: We challenged ourselves with a "Directive Detective" puzzle.  These are a bit complicated, but really hone those reading and logical thinking skills!  We also work on relationships and connections when we interpret the meaning of the quote or phrase.
  • Communication: We worked on a new "Weighty Word"-kleptomaniac.  The kids are becoming dictionary and thesaurus experts!
Focus Study
We worked on our Audrey Aims unit by gaining more knowledge of Ancient Egypt through watching History Channel: “Howard Carter: Archeology-Ancient Egypt”.

Algebraic Thinking
We began a Hands On Equations assessment to check understanding of the concepts learned so far.  We'll finish that next week and group the children according to need for review and those ready to move on.

Affective
We began our work with Virtues in Action unit.  The children sorted various character traits into categories using their own evaluation process. We had an interesting discussion about what the traits are and how they might be valuable in school and later in life.

Thanks to Yashas for a GREAT job on his blog post!

A few more details:
We began work on Acids & Bases as we prepare to create our papyrus.  The kids will continue this work for homework this week on our Target Glog.

Today was a wonderful day.  We started off with "Audrey Aims-Art Conservator."  It was fun.  The new kids got their notebooks for this focus study.

After that, we did stations.  The stations were: Transformation, Design a Leprechaun costume, best of all-the cryptogram!  In a cryptogram, there is a logic puzzle.  You need to turn it into a quote from a famous person.  We love that one!

Then we did H.O.E (Hands-on-Equations).  You have some cubes and pawns. You use them to solve the equations.  We've always loved that!

Next we went to lunch.  We didn't do much there, ended up on green.
When we came back, we went to recess.  We played football, but we played it with a brain ball.  When we came back in, we continued H.O.E.
Then we checked our assignment sheets.  We read TMUFOMBEF (The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler), chapter 8.

We continued our study of Ancient Egypt with some focused research in the Computer Lab.  The kids divided into groups, listed topics for research, and assigned tasks to complete.  Later they collected their notes onto posters and presented their information to the larger group.  They did a great job evaluating and collaborating to get the needed information about scrolls, papyrus, hieroglyphics, and The Book of the Dead.

Our stations were great today!  We learned to do a new type of convergent thinking puzzle-Cryptogram.  It was challenging, but I think the kids made good progress!  Our other station focused on divergent thinking with an elaboration activity about Dr. Seuss' hat.  The responses were SO creative!

Our algebraic thinking once again centered on Egyptian Math.  The kids are almost experts on calculating using the symbols.  It really causes them to focus on the careful regrouping!

Our novel study is progressing!  We've finished over half the book now and have gotten really deep into the mystery.  We can't wait to see what happens next.  The kids are using their evaluative thinking skills to answer tough questions about the characters and the book.  They're also making GREAT connections as they analyze the events unfolding in the story!
