Terrific Learning Today!

We hit the ground running today for a ton of learning!

Stations:
We used our divergent thinking skills to create Ninja Comic Strips based on an idea from our novel.  The kids are so clever!  We used our divergent and convergent thinking skills to solve a variety of tasks on our "Waker-Upper-Robot Name".  Finally, we tackled a larger logic puzzle to stretch those convergent thinking skills a little bit more!

Novel Study:
We read a few more chapters in our novel, finding out that E can still scare off a bully!

Unit Study:
We checked out some fun Robot Dance Moves and then created a dance for our Robots to do next week.  The kids listed each part of the dance in computer code, so they can program the robots to execute the moves.  It should be lots of fun to see the robots dance next time!

We also learned about events in programs.  Check out the pictures of the kids acting out the events as I called them out.  It was fun and a little bit goofy!

Algebraic Thinking:
We finished up our day with Hands On Equations, using pictorial representation to solve equations.  The kids really seem to understand the basics of our beginning algebra.  They are ready for the next level in 4th grade!

Until next time,

Bits of Algebra & Binary Bracelets!

We had so much fun with our learning today!

First, we read some of our novel.  Our favorite robot "E" caught fire and Sammy's second-best friend put the fire out with his nerdy science knowledge!  Sammy's father finished another Ninja Comic, so we're going to create our own Ninja Comics next week.  We started the story planning today and will finish that and creation next week.

After that, we challenged our algebraic thinking with Hands On Equations Lesson 7.  We learned to draw our solutions, in case we don't have pieces available.  Hmm...sounds like good practice for Middle School, when they won't have manipulatives to solve algebra problems.

Finally, we used our convergent AND divergent thinking to create bracelets using Binary Code.  The kids used our Binary Alphabet Chart and then chose colors to represent the 0s and 1s.  The finished bracelets with their Initials in Binary form look great!

Short and sweet!

Our time together was short due to Milestones Testing, but we made the most of it!

Novel Study:
We read a few chapters in our book, discussed foreshadowing, and used our critical thinking skills to make a prediction about what might happen next with Dr. Scientrific.

Algebraic Thinking:
We combined math and art with a wonderful Multiples Mosaic Activity.  The kids found multiples of 3, 4, and Common Multiples.  Love the way they jump to work above grade level!  The finished projects are gorgeous!

Unit Study:
We refreshed and practiced our debugging with another round of Relay Coding.  The kids were more successful this time.  We'll try it once more in a few weeks to see how they improve again.

HW:  Finish the Multiple Mosaic, if not already done.

Until next time,
Dr. Kraeger
