Focus Study: Critical & Evaluative Thinking
We began our study of documentaries today, since we'll be making a class documentary about our Cardboard Challenge.  The kids were WAY BEYOND excited when they heard the news!  We developed interview questions to film next week, so we can put those in our movie.

It is going to be great, especially with our 3 NEW iPAD Mini's!  The kids will be able to work in groups and get all the interviews done!  It's going to be such fun!

Logical Thinking:
We solved a pretty complicated Halloween Logic puzzle.  The kids are making good progress in learning to do more challenging puzzles!

Algebraic Thinking & Communication:
We finally finished our pattern books and shared them today-well, most of them!  We'll get to the rest next week.  The kids were very interested in each other's stories.  I asked the kids to think about the difference between a code and a pattern.  Some of them only included a code in their story, not a pattern.  I think we all know the difference now.

Divergent Thinking:
We exercised our creativity by SCAMPERING Halloween.  The kids showed ways to Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Magnify/Minify, Put to other uses, Eliminate, Rearrange.  The results were so clever and very imaginative!  Check them out in the hall outside our classroom!

Algebraic Thinking:
We explored and extended our algebraic thinking with a new game called "Triplets".  The kids were so engaged in the game, they didn't want to stop playing.  We'll be working on that again next week to keep building those skills.

Vocabulary/Critical Thinking:
We continued our study of Weighty Words with Expedient.  The kids did a good job explaining and illustrating the meaning of this commonly used word.

Packing in Learning!

We started our short day on a fun note with Logical Thinking Games for Morning Work!  What a nice change of pace for the kids and a great way to build those important skills!  We played Boggle, Qwirkle, and Nine Square Visual Puzzles.

Critical Thinking & Communication:
Most of the kids finished their Pattern Books today.  We will have one more short work session to allow everyone to finish up.  There are MANY creative ideas on how to illustrate patterns!

Evaluative Thinking/Self-Reflection:
We took a few moments to self-evaluate our work on the Cardboard Challenge.  Following that, we reflected on the Project as a whole.  I'm looking forward to reading the responses.

Affective/Self-Reflection:
We explored mindfulness a bit more and practiced 4-7-8 breathing to refocus after our Brain Break.

Divergent Thinking/Connections:
The kids had amazing creativity and divergent thinking in creating a way to transform a pumpkin into a connection with one of our Character Virtues.  Stop by and see their great work outside our classroom!

Communication/Critical Thinking:
We learned a new word from our Weighty Word book: Dogmatic.

HW: Complete the Frayer chart for our vocabulary word: Dogmatic

We had a productive and exciting day!

Convergent Thinking:
We learned a new way to explore and strengthen our logical thinking skills-Versatiles!  This is a fun, hands-on way to show learning and convergent thinking skills.  Kids can check their answers at a glance, then revising their work as needed.

Affective:
Our mindfulness practice included a perfect "Before-Bed" video called "Hot Air Balloon Adventure."
We continued our study of character virtues with a look at "Book of Virtues-Teamwork".  We played a fun teamwork game "Balloon Bop".  Check it out here:

Despite a lengthy power outage, we had enough light in Room 227 to share our Cardboard Creations with the 4th Grade Target students.  All had fun, enjoyed hearing about the creations, and were amazed at what our 3rd graders had created!  Check out some pictures of the fun:

What a fantastic, exciting, and creative day we had!  A great big THANK YOU to our parent helpers!  We couldn't have done it without you!

Our Cardboard Challenge was a big success!  I was completely amazed by the level of planning, details, and pure creative energy in the room as the kids worked to bring their ideas to life.  We'll be sharing these Creations with other kids in the next week or two and then they can come home (if you want them home!)

Check out some photos of the fun!
