Another busy day

Third grade had a busy day this Wednesday!  We worked on convergent and divergent thinking with some word puzzles and creative problem solving activities.  Your children are so creative!  I'm amazed at what they can think of and how different all of their ideas are!

Our first day of the Focus Study-Space was exciting!  The children created an interactive notebook and completed a science probe about the solar system.

We worked hard on algebraic thinking with an Exemplar, which is a problem solving activity.  The students had to figure out how many phone calls would be made about a field trip, if the teacher called 2 students and each of them called 2 students, until all 31 children had been notified.  Many different ways to solve, and what a challenge!

We began reading our novel study, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.  The kids are hooked on the story already!  We also started our vocabulary building book, Weighty Words.  The first story was very funny, and now the kids know what the word abasement means.  Maybe your child has already quizzed you.  Did you know it?
Homework: Illustrate each of the six words from V.I.A., Virtues in Action.

Looking forward to next week!

third grade knocked my socks off!

Wow!  These third graders worked so hard today!!!  Even with the crazy picture day schedule, they managed to squeeze in SO much learning!

We tried a new way of learning--Thinking Stations!  During this time we worked on convergent thinking with our logic puzzles and divergent thinking with our collaborative problem solving task.

I really enjoyed seeing all the creativity in the AMAZING word clouds the kids completed for homework!   BRAVO!

We also took a multiple intelligence survey to find out which ways we're smart.  We discussed the results today.

We started strong in algebraic thinking with an intro lesson in Hands On Equations (H.O.E.).  The kids practiced solving some simple equations today and will work more on this next week.

Our brains were fully active during our affective session when we reflected on our new learning experiences, our talents (M.I.), and our ability to collaborate.  The students really enjoyed trying new ways to extend their learning!

Thank you so much for remembering to sign the Assignment sheet each week!

Homework for this week is to check this blog and visit the Target Glog for some fun websites to explore.
MYSTERY QUESTION:  How many websites are on the Science Websites page?
See you next week!

My favorite 3rd Grade memories are reading really good books and camping overnight with the Girl Scouts.
